If you are one of the more than 86 million people living in the U.S. who suffers from pain, you know that just waking up and contemplating getting out of bed in the morning can be a debilitating experience. Whether you suffer from pain in your neck, back, knees, elbows, shoulder, abdomen, pelvis or feet, you know firsthand that doing even the simplest things can be extremely difficult, even overwhelming.
Pain and depression are closely related. In many people, terrible pain can cause feelings of depression and, conversely, feelings of depression can cause physical pain.
It is a vicious cycle that can most easily be ended by seeking immediate treatment for pain. Psychotherapy can also help, but ending, or at least moderating, physical pain can more quickly and easily put an end to depressive thoughts and emotions.
Come in to our state-of-the-art facility at ChiroMax Wellness Centers today and let us find the right treatment plan to get you out of pain and back to feeling like yourself again.
The most common forms of pain management used in America today are:
Physical Therapy (PT) – treatment of disorders of the muscles, bones, or joints by means of physical agents such as heat, light, water, manual and electronic massage and exercise.
Analgesics – various over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be somewhat helpful in the alleviation of pain and swelling. For chronic pain sufferers, this form of medication is often not enough.
Prescription Pain Medication – narcotic analgesics such as hydrocodone and codeine can be prescribed to reduce pain and swelling. In cases of neuropathic or chronic pain, anti-seizure and antidepressant medications can be prescribed. Risks include upset stomach, constipation, dizziness, respiratory distress and addiction.
Injections – many doctors perform nerve block and/or steroid injections into painful areas such as the knees and back. Headache, nausea and vomiting can sometimes occur, as can infection.
Surgery – examples include cases of traumatic nerve damage, degenerative spondylolisthesis associated with spinal stenosis which results from arthritic changes in the joints, and knee replacement surgery for debilitating cases of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
